Louvers and More Louvers

Recently louvered a 1941 Willys Coupe hood and a Ford Deuce original hood. Over 200 old time, 2 1/2" wide round top, louvers in total. For some reason, due to my limited ability in photography, the short row of louvers in the passenger side portion of the Deuce hood appear out of line. Well they are dead straight... Each row and column of louvers are near perfect in alignment, when looking down or across the hood. Wish I knew more about photography and back lighting for pictures.
The majority of the time is spent on the layout for the louvers, on the inside of the hoods ! Cheers !

Deuce Cowl Patch Panels

Finished hammer welding two cowl patch panels in the Deuce 5 window. Slow but steady progress as the entire floor including sub-rails have been replaced in this Deuce. Just my opinion, every Deuce is worth saving. Enjoy !

The first picture is the passenger side cowl patch welded into place, which still requires the paint to be removed, then some light hammer and dolly work.

The second picture, is of the drivers side cowl completed.

The third picture, is of the drivers side cowl rust removed, before the new cowl patch was installed....

Deuce Doors, Repairing the Missing Bottoms !

Cutting out the rot, rebuilding the missing Deuce door bottoms.... You will notice a piece of metal (Rot) removed from the bottom / side of doors, which has been welded on, patched and covered with metal. These patches over patches have been removed to restore the original door bottom.....

Tradition Continues - Hot Rod Art of Jeff Norwell

Hot Rod Bolt Covers & Transmission Spacers

We machined a couple of motor mount, bolt covers, which will add a little bling to a already jeweled, 331 Chrysler Hemi. We also had to machine a spacer, as referred to below, for a 4 speed manual transmission mated to the 331 Elephant Motor (Chrysler Hemi). A nice knurled edge was added to the spacer to add a little, "unseen" detail..... Remember when installing your hydraulic throw out bearing, leave at least .100" of clearence between the bearing and the pressure plate.....

Throw Out Bearing & Pressure Plate, Spacer

Just a couple of pictures of a spacer which we are manufacturing to space the hydraulic throw out bearing, 3/4" closer to the pressure plate. We are mating a 331 Chrysler Hemi to a New Process, 4 speed standard, Chrysler tranmission. We are using an adapter plate, however; a spacer must be used to achieve the correct spacing between the throw out bearing and the pressure plate.

The spacer is machined to accept/cover the flange on the input bearing retainer (which covers the input shaft bearing on the transmission, in picture # 3) and protruding on the other end to properly center the McLeod Bearing (picture # 2).

Martha's Table, Christmas Float 2011

Not only do we build hot rods and sell nostalgic automotive parts, we assisted a local community meal program, named ""Martha's Table"", with their Christmas Parade Float in Kingston Ontario. Members of Martha's Table required transportation of the once hay wagon, which became a floating stage, much due to the hard work by master set builder, Randy Johnston, of Kingston, Ontario. See you next year and many thanks to all the fine people of Martha's Table and the service to our community by providing hot meals throughout the year.... Martha's Table served just shy of 40,000 meals last year which does not include their drop in center where a light lunch may be obtained free of charge. By the way, the cost for the hot meal at supper, $1.00 !!!!!!!

As a side note, this float was made possible due to a private donation by a person who did not wish their identity to become known. This float DID NOT use any funds associated to Martha's Table....

Deuce Sub-Rails and Floor Panels

New sub-rails, wheel wells and a custom made under the seat floor pan, has been welded into place. Floor pans are 18 Ga. with beads rolled into the floor, to resemble the original floor, whiling provide extra support. The Deuce floor is finally taking shape....

Where's The Pepper ?

Well there is no pepper, however; if you have not been to the Bonneville Salt Flats, it is a must attend event. This past August we completed the P-38 Belly Tanker, however; we ran into major issues with the head gasket as we are having a new one being designed. Long story short, we headed off to Wendover Utah for the event without the car, oh well, next year !

Deuce Sub-Rails Instalation

I have received a few emails from the "HAMB" regarding the instalation of new sub rails in the Deuce which I am building for the Guru of Hot Rod Art...

Anyways here are a few pic's just to give you an idea.

Cut the old sub-rails and rotten wheel wells out, set up the new subrails on the completed Deuce frame, build the floor with the kick up for the rear Model 'A' cross member to suspend the quick change and sit the body over the sub-rails, paying attention to door clearance !

Shiney Motor Mounts ?

How about some custom motor mounts suspending a vintage cradle, Hurst motor mount, on a Baby Dodge Hemi in a Deuce created at the Candy Factory ? Gotta love those ole' South Bend metal lathes, some 50 years old, to turn out some bling..... Here 'ya go ! Vroooom......

So you say, vibration, etc ? Hey, it'za hot rod... Balanced motor, who needs cushion mounts ? The Beach Boys sang about "Good Vibrations", therefore; think of it as music as we don't want no stinking radio's in our hot rods !

Just a couple of progress pic's... Custom push rods arrived today, 12 1/4" long for the roller cam, roller rockers and roller lifters (0.645 lift), motor is installed minus push rods, index the cam, complete the wiring and finish the fuel lines and we will finally hear the "Jimmy Sing".....

The bottom of the tanker is sitting off to the side, as we just had to push the tanker outside for its first picture, outside of the garage.....

Just a small update on the Belly Tanker. Paint has been added to the diet, motor and axles are being built, custom rad, etc. has been completed. Just waiting for the Jimmy 302 to come back from the engine shop. Add wiring, a couple of brake lines, with gas and oil, and fire it up !

Just as a side note : Mike Wilson of Joyceville, Ontario, deserves a huge "thank you", as without Mike's help, determination and numerous hours, this project would not have become a reality this year...

Belly Tank - Paint Very Soon !

Just a little progress on the P-38 tank the last few weeks. We almost have the top and bottom of the tank trimmed to properly fit the frame.

The cut out on the driver's side is for the 5 deuce, Howard Intake and header exiting the tank.

The hole below the push bar is for the parachute, which mounts inside of the body.

Pass the salt please !

Chrome and more Chrome..... Well the 'ole 1934 Ford frame is underway as all parts are back from the paint shop and the chrome suspension pieces turned out just perfect. Power plant, a Chrysler 331 Hemi, is at the machine shop waiting for a new set of slugs ! Brake lines will be completed the following day in the shop.....

Well the roll cage is tack in place, however; finish welding needs to be completed as well as gussetts added to main hoops above and below the shoulder rail. After welding, will be the instalation of the head rest to the rear of the cage, which runs the entire length of the tank.... Bonneville here we come !

Diamond Deuce - Gets a New Pair of White Shoes !

The Diamond Deuce has recently obtained new pair of 'White Shoes', and Cal Custom carb scoops complimemnts of her owner, Hot Rod Artist Jeff Norwell. The Diamond Deuce will be tearing it up at the Lonestar Round-Up this April in the great city of Austin, Texas ! Before and after pic's....

One of my favourite pictures of the Diamond Deuce is situated in front of SRV on the wall of the Continental Club were Jeff just happened to park his hot rod, imagine.... P-38 Tank Build - Update !

Hopefully the Belly Tanker will be ready for this August, Bonneville 2011, running in the XO/GL Class.

Here are a few updated pictures of the frame/roll cage progress....

Power will be a 302 Jimmy mated to an adapter plate/mid-plate which is bolted to a SB Chevy scatter shield. The Munice 4 speed will only have 3rd and 4th gears.... Therefore a push truck will be in order, just maybe, fellow hot rod buddy Kevin Silva from Texas, may have his '40 Ford truck ready for August 2011...

Land Speed Car - Frame Build Underway

Well we are in the process of building the frame for the P-38 Belly Tank. Rear end is solid mounted, no drive shaft, is tacked into place and the front axle is installed minus the lever shocks. The mid plate will double as the adapter plate for mating up to a SB Chev scattershield to the 1956 GMC 302 ci inline six often referrd to as a "Jimmy". Motor mounts are next, then let the fun begin, bending up tubing for the roll cage.

Bonneville P-38 Tank, Gets a New Heart !

Mr. Jimmy 302 himself, "Joe Fontana", helped me out in a "great way", with new parts for the heart of the P-38 Bonneville tank, for a 1958 GMC 302. The 'roller cam' ground by Ed Iskenderian with .645 lift, WOW, 1.75 ratio roller rockers, roller lifters, 4 bolt billet main caps, steel straight cut timing gears, oil dam and a beautiful polished "SKINNER" valve cover, all manufactured by Joe Fontana.

I cannot say enough about Joe and all his assistance with the parts, the heartbeat of the tank. Joe actually acquired a "cam blank" from Don Ferguson (who was more than happy to part with the blank) to assist with my project. Amazing....

This Jimmy will turn around 6,000 RPM (plus). Now that may not seem like a high RPM compared to todays modern V8's, however; for a 1958 GMC straight 6, 302 cubic inch motor, that is amazing. The tank will be running in the GL/XO class with a stock head reworked by Sissell's Automotive a few years ago with 1.60 exhaust valves and 2.02 intake valves...

'46 / '48 Ford Cross Member

Recently built and installed a cross member in a '46 / '48 Ford frame encompassing a removable transmission mount. The hot rod will be powered by a 331 Chrysler Hemi mated to a automatic transmission. Pretty "Kool Kar", for a gentlman 70 years young ! Hot rod artist, Jeff Norwell, took his Deuce down to the Round-Up in Austin, Texas this past April which we completed shortly before the show. Photographer extrordinarie, John Jackson, shot Jeff's Deuce in an industrial area of Austin, Texas on a rainy Sunday morning. I though to myself, "what a terrible morning for rain", however; 'man oh man', did the pic's turn out great with all the rain !

A 5 page feature and the cover of Rod & Custom magazine for the January 2011 issue. Wow !! Rod and Custom Magazine, the second oldest car mag in this great land....

It was a pleasure working with you Jeff on this build and folks stay tuned for our next/current project out of the ""Candy Factory"" !

Friend, Larry O'Gorman, master engraver with over 28 years of experience mastering the 'plates' which print the bank notes and coin we carry, engraved a few coins for upcoming projects of Hot Rod Artist, Jeff Norwell and myself.

The "Rat Fink" has been engraved on a brass coin, polished to a high luster with a coating of clear applied to prevent tarnishing.

Headers And A Quick Change, Then What ?

Just finished the headers for the baby Dodge Hemi... As Jeff Norwell refers to his Deuce as; D.A.D. - The Dodge Ardun Deuce. Hence the little baby Dodge Hemi is nothing more than a flathead with an overhead valve conversion, without the huge expense of running an Ardun...

Headers are completed, Quick Change is installed. Next; "Porter Mufflers" and exhaust over the QC axles, then along the bottom of the frame rails beside the gas tank.... Enjoy 'til next time.... More to come, spy pic's at a later date when Norwell completes the art work for this build...

Next Project Under Way - P38 Stretched Tank

Well hot rod artist "Jeff Norwell" did it again ! A real quick sketch by Jeff of my next project which is under way. It will be a stretched P38 tank, 20" added to the middle, powered by a '58 GMC Jimmy six 302. The tank will be running in the XO/GL class at Bonneville. XO - relates to a straight engine, pre-1958 and limited to 325 cubes with a stock head, however; porting is allowed.
GL- relates to a 'gas' 'lakester'.

Well back to the garage to bend up some more tubing. Yes folks - there will be a canopy covering the crazy pilot attempting to reach 200 MPH. See you there in August 2011 ?

Louvered Panels and a '34 Ford Frame

Two louvered panels our shop recently punched out for an nostalgic drag car being built up our way. 36 louvers in each aluminium panel.

Second, is a '34 Ford frame we recently completed which came to our shop as a rolling chassis. The front end has a nice set of split wishbones and drop axle set up, however; the rear was donated from an 80's Corvette suffering from instalation issues. The half shafts and brake calipers were hitting the frame rails !

After some discussion, the customer (his first hot rod build) decided to switch the rear end to a Chrysler 8 3/4" which certainly has the nostalgic feel to accompany the 331 Chrysler hemi, three pedals, air plane seats and steelies wrapped with wide whites.

The customer wished to retain the center cross member, so we made some alterations to accept the new rear end. The rear end is now suspended with a set of QA1 coil-overs and ladder bars. A custom rear cross member was manufactured at our shop, notched, to allow for proper travel of the third member.

Center Cross-Members FOR SALE

You may now purchase a custom center cross member, made to order. 6" tall with a 2" top and bottom lip which resembles an original '40 Ford cross member, however; this is new, 10 ga. (approximately 1/8") metal.

There will be 3" flared holes (incruments determined by customer or suggsted) or if requested, oval flared holes, however; $20 will be added for each oval flare.

You will receive "two" 8' lengths with 3" round and/or oval holes flared to your request. If you wish, the cross member will be bent to your specifications, however; ease of shipping may be best if you pie cut and bend your frame rails once you recieve the goods.

$325 Canadian for a pair, two 8' lengths, shipping extra or pick up at my shop. Frame rails are built at time of request to customers design.

These new and longer rails, compared to the original '40 Ford cross member, allows your rear ladder bars to be parellel with the rear legs of the cross member.

Experience welding and fabrication is required for this product.....

Deuce Frame Build

Just working on a customers Deuce frame. 10 ga. American Stamping rails with inset boxinig plates and a clone of a '40 Ford X-member built here at Candy's Hot Rod Supply..... Tail or rear of the X-member will be parallel with the rear ladder bars, which if you remember; when using an original '40 X-member, you will not achieve. Therefore, the rear ladder bars and the tail of the X-member are now parallel. Stay tuned for pictures of the quick change rear end, Dodge Hemi and custom headers....

By the way folks, the mufflers are manufactured by "Porter Mufflers", excellent product and a design much superior than the glass packs....

Flared 3" Holes, 2 1/2" Old Time Louvers & Roll Cages

Well just a small update, here are 3" flared holes in 1/8" plate for a center X-Member I am building for a customers Deuce... More to follow on the Duece at a later date... Yes we punch 2 1/2" old time round top louvers and tube dyes to properly bend up your roll cage....

GMC Jimmy 302 - Fisher Aluminum Head

As part of our garage crawl tour we stopped into a hidden treasure, owned and created by a master machinist 82 years young.

First we spoke about his Buick Nailhead heads he made out of plate steel, however; my attention quickly turned to a GMC 302 Jimmy with a "Fisher" aluminum head, injected on alcohol, McGurk valve cover reworked by the owner using a rubber 'O' ring instead of the regular cork gasket, and Wayne timing chain cover to accept the Hilborn pump to feed the alcohol to the injectors.

It is not exactly known how many "Fisher" heads were produced; , however; the number is believed to be less than twelve. This motor is an Ardun Flathead killer....

The Jimmy ran a short while ago in a vintage car, out performing any flathead around !

It would be very difficult to place a dollar valve on this motor as it may be the only one, or one of two, in existance....

The first picture, is a 1.8 ratio rocker assembly manufactured by the same machinist, for a stock iron head Jimmy 302....

No it cannot be purchased and sorry I will not provide the owners contact information, which was my promise to this very young man of 82 years.....

Buick Nailhead - After Market Heads !

Were there any after market high performance heads available for the 401 / 425 Bucik Nailhead ?

Well the answer would be; Buick made less than 30 cast iron 'D' port heads and less than 10 aluminum heads... However; on a garage tour the other day look at what we saw, STEEL heads made back in the mid 60's which were injected on alcohol.

These heads were welded up using an old arc welder with 1/2" plate for the top and bottom of the head with some pretty nice tin work to form the outer structure of the head. Amazing work when you also consider the heads used Chrysler hemi valves, no harden seats as mentioned the motor was injected on alcohol. Due to the large valves, compared to the stock 'nails' used for valves, the top of the piston ended up having a reverse hemi piston. The top of the piston was dished, in essence, the dish also created a cooling effect on the top of the piston where the alcohol would pool and cool the slug and allow for valve clearance.

The rockers consisted of Ford 'Y' block rockers, machined, to accept a roller bearing in place of the original Ford shaft and affixed to custom pedistals.

In the picture with the aluminum valve cover, you will first notice this head looks more like a big block Chev, however; you will clearly see the valley cover.

Next to the Offy breather on the valve cover you will notice a crank timing gear. This motor also ran a "gear drive", custom cut, by the builders father who was also a master machinist....

You will also notice a small 1/2" tube exitting the front of the head, this is the only cooling for the head, remember the motor ran on alcohol, therefore; cooling is not such an issue as with race gas, etc....

The oiling system consisted of a capillary tube along the bottom/out side edge, of the rocker platform assembly which feed each rocker. This capillary tube has been removed for repair.... Oh yes, the oil pump, not a stock factory oil pump, instead a pump manufactured using various aircraft parts ! Sorry I cannot remember the parts, as it did not remotely resemble a Nailhead oil pump.

The aluminum plate timing chain cover, consisting of three plates welded togehter then milled, completed the front of the motor to accept a Hilborn fuel pump.

This motor ran very strong back in the day and WON super modified races....

This motor is not for sale and I promised the owner I would not post his contact information, you will see this motor running again.... Truely an amazing piece of art, imagine if they had a MIG or TIG welder back in the day...

Just finished a front "V" spreader bar, rear spreader bar and tail light brackets holding '37 Ford tail lights on a custonmers '34 Ford 3 window coupe. Both items are ready for the ole' chrome shop.

On top of the Candy Factory, a weather vane, image of our nostalgic drag car designed by "TOD Enterprises" listed in our favourites. This company will place ANY image on your weather vane, sign, etc. Just send them your picture (straight on picture) and you will be very pleased with the results.....

Hot Rod Hero, Art Chrisman

Well, a very wise man once told me you should never place a person on a pedestal, however; Art Chrisman is one of the greatest hot rod pioneers, in my opinion.... Blown Ardun flatheads, blown 427 Ford SOHC's and just great all around rods and power plants in his shop currently, he has not even began to slow down. You couldn't even begin to write a bio of the three Chrisman's and their past acomplishments in a short book. 'Art' is a true gentleman and what a blast attending his Bar-B-Que's, you never know who may walk in....

Oh yes, the 392 hemi, this was not at Art's shop. A motor I have been chasing for a while....

"Canadian" Flathead - Aluminum Heads EH !

Only made in Canada Eh ?

Aluminum, high compression heads, with no fins......

These heads were cast at the Alcan Factory in Kingston, Ontario Canada which were manufactured for both the early and late flat heads, both Ford and Mercury. However; the late Ford heads, which are pictured, are very rare compared to the early aluminum heads. The early heads are still floating around out there but as I said, the late heads are becoming extremely sought after.

'Cheater heads', well "Weiand" manufactured heads without the fins, however; these were obviously aftermarket heads as the aluminum heads pictured are a gennie Ford item....

There has been much discussion regarding these original aluminum heads, with a few different opinions, however; some very knowledgable dirt, circle track racers and antique guru's from my area share the same opinion.....

"MADE IN CANADA" is embossed on the heads as you can see above picture.

All Canadian aluminum heads had markings as numerous heads are floating around without markings, which are more often than not, finned heads which had the fins milled off as dicussed below.

Remember, old time circle track racers in Ontario, Canada and upstate N.Y. would machine the fins off of aftermarket heads as the rules for dirt, circle track racing, once stated: "No finned heads". Hence, the racers taking this rule to the letter of the word, would mill the fins off of the heads.

The rules then stated; "No aftermarket heads", however; Canadian heads would still be permitted under this rule.

The third rule change, finally read; "No aluminum or after market heads" as the majority of racers and rule makers were unaware of factory aluminum heads. This is quoted from an old time circle track racer.

These are a very nice casting which my be polished to a mirror like finish. The heads pictured have a slight bead blasting.......

The Candy Factory

Just a few pic's of our daily driver and our nostalgia drag car resting for the winter months, in the front of the Candy Factory (garage/shop).

The black '33 Ford is a customers car which came to our shop approximately one month ago to be completed, as the owner has decided to switch builders and ideas. The rod is powered by a 331 Chrysler Hemi mated to a four speed with three pedals just to keep him busy and having fun....

We have completed the front end using '33/'34 split wish bones, 4" dropped tube axle with the usual disc brake conversation for '37 to '41 Ford spindles. The steelies and black wall, bias ply tires, are on order which will exemplify the front end, to be plated. Exterior body colour - well I believe the owner has settled on a cool ice blue paint, seems fitting for our winter climate ! No fenders of course.

Yes there are two hemi's along the outside wall of the shop for our next drag car project and a 'W' head, stroked 348 for my bosses roadster (yes - my bride, my wife, my warden, the official boss).

The flat blue Deuce five window is an original Henry Ford body waiting for a build early in 2010 for another, top secret customer... More on that 5 winda' at a later date..... Maybe there's a hemi in the midst of the Deuce build?

The "black whale" sitting at the back of the shop is a P-38 tank with a 20" extension added to the middle of the tank to allow for the straight six motor and 5 speed standard transmission. The P-38 tank is waiting for its tube frame, powered by a 302 GMC Jimmy six which will be running in the XO/GL class at Bonneville in August 2011.... I don't think my better half is too happy with this project, however; she understand my madness, I hope...

Well here is our daily driver, unchopped (just because everyone asks why didn't I chop it) deuce, powered by a stroked 409 (474 CI, 454 crank & rods, .030 over slugs), 871 supercharger and a super T-10 4 speed cog cluster... Yes it has three pedals.... The rod is now 13 years old, strong as ever..... Gotta love those 409's.....

1960's style white tuck & roll bench seat, tuck & roll head liner, tuck & roll trunk interior...... Gas milage: well not all that great.... Comfort: who cares because you are having fun..... Radio: Yes the mill up front.... Billet: Say what, I don't think so..... Air conditioning: Yes sir, the cowl vent....

Hot Rod Art, Rod Powell

Some many know, recall or have purchased a book on how to flame hot rods, etc...
The book and person I am referring to is no other than the famous, Rod Powell from California.
While attending the Lonestar Round-Up 2009 with Bob Owens of Owens Salvage Parts in Wellington Texas, we picked up our Western Exterminators, or 'Little Men' as the statues are so often referred to as, from Rod in Austin, Texas. Mr Owens, the 'gentleman' whom you should all buy your vintage tin from, is pictured on the left, Rod is middle and little old me is on the right.
Von Dutch (Mr. Howard) painted a few of these, one is pictured in the bio of Von Dutch. Rod did an awsome job, and NO, it is NOT for sale at any price.....

Rod is creating very, very few of these 'Little Men', maybe TWO more. If you want one, you better get together your resume' and beg.... The picture does 'no' justice showing Rod's attention to detail.

The base which the 'Little Man' is fixed to, consists of a great lace paint scheme with excellent pin stripping... Yes, that is a Flyin' Eye Ball (made by Rod) getting ready to be smacked by the Exterminator.

Our Past Project, the 'Diamond Deuce'

Well here are a few secret shots of the build of the "Diamond Deuce" last summer by the crew at Candy's Hot Rod Supply. This hot rod was commissioned by hot rod artist 'guru', Jeff Norwell. Well to say the least, he drew it and we had to build it. Have you ever attempted to build something a hot rod artist drew, well it was a enjoyable challange. Years Gone By, The Great "Bob Beezer"

Some may recall the Canadian Indian, rain dancer at the NHRA events from years gone by. Well Bob Beezer, or the "Beez" as many of his friends refer to him as is alive and well. Bob is picture in my driveway in front of my shop this past summer with his newest project, he is recreating his 41 Willy's, supercharged, hemi powered drag car. The Beez always has a great story to share which you never heard before, a real pleasure and a experience you will never forget. Many of his experiences at various NHRA events which will never be in print..... I'll leave it at that for now, more to follow at a later date.....

James Boys - Canadian Gasser

One of our hero's in the Canadian drag racing world and still running strong at many Nothern American and Southern Canadian tracks. Art work commissioned by hot rod art guru, Jeff Norwell, depicts the all steel '33 Willys gasser running a 427 Chev Rat Motor, with a traditional mechancial Hilborn injection. By the way folks this car may be for sale as the friendly owners, Sandra & Paul Dunbar, are planning their next build. Paul being the great fella' will even through in the art work....

This car ran the best pass of its existance this past summer at Grand Bend, Ontario with a 9.64.

Mothers Worry, Our Nostalgic Drag Car

"Mothers Worry", is not a tribute to Ed Roth, however it is a tribute to my Mom who lost a great battle with cancer. One of my last conversations with my Mom who was very ill at the time, as I obviously placed the drag car build on the back burner, was; how she was going to worry about me driving "that thing". Hence; the naming of "Mothers Worry" for the nostalgic drag car powered by an 871 blown, Chrysler 392 hemi running on 116 octane race fuel. Three years later the bugs are finally worked out of our car, having a blast. Many thanks for the great memories Mom, you will always be remembered !
